嘉偉德牧師夫婦2009年請安函

15 January 2010

Dear Rev. Lim, Peng-an:

A belated western Happy New Year and an early Happy New Year of the Tiger.

Thank you so much for your December 8 letter. It is always a pleasure to hear about the ministry and activities of the TCCCNA. We still recall with joy the wonderful missionary reunion that you organized for us retired PCT missionaries in Boston in October 2007.

Thank you again for that wonderful event We do continue to pray for the PCT, its leaders and the people of Taiwan. We continue to closely follow developments there, like the recent earthquake, and also political developments. Like you, we are very concerned at recent developments in terms of the Ma administration reverting to previous undemocratic practices and in putting in jeopardy Taiwan's status as an independent country by wooing the government of the PRC at the expense of the Taiwanese people.

As for us, I am enclosing our recent 2009 "Dear Friends" letter that will catch you up on our news during the past year. We are grateful for God's blessing and for good health. I am also enclosing a flyer describing my forthcoming book The Church Under the Cross that will be published by Eerdmans in two volumes. Volume I contains my experiences in Taiwan and then Hong Kong within the context of the valiant efforts of the PCT and the Hong Kong churches in their struggles with fascism and colonialism respectively. I think this work will be of interest to Taiwanese pastors and laypeople alike. Volume II relates at length the struggles of the Chinese people during the communist era and then the Christians of Indonesia in their struggles with Islamic and Hindu fundamentalism. It is my hope that the TCCCNA might be able to make information about this work available to its members. As noted in the flyer, whoever orders both volumes in advance will be granted a pre-publication discount of 30%, while those ordering volume I only will receive a 20% discount on that volume. Part I will contain 78 photos related to my ministry in Taiwan and the PCT's struggle during the "White Terror" period along with subsequent developments down to 2008.

Thank you and Mrs. Lim for your wonderful work on the websites you mentioned. When I have a bit more time, I will try to add some comments and additions.

Thanks to the TCCCNA too for the very thoughtful and generous Christmas gift which we deeply appreciate , especially during these difficult economic times for retired folks Enclosed is a completed form along with a fairly recent photo of Renske and myself.
