23rd Dec 2010

Shi-Yang Lin

Dear Shi-Yang Lin

Thank you very much for your letter and the generous cheque.

I am glad to say that I have kept in good health and am active in various ways here in Cambridge. We attend St. Columbus United Reformed (formerly Presbyterian) Church, which shares its premises with a Chinese church.

I am in touch with the World Oral Literature Project based in Cambridge, which aims to record the many ‘dying’ languages in the world. In Taiwan I learnt the Paiwan language and helped with the translation of the Paiwan Shorter Bible. So I have been supplying WOLP with information about the Paiwan language. I don’t know whether the Paiwan people would regard it as a ‘dying’ language. I have put this question to officials in the General Assembly offices and await their response.

We are having unusually cold weather here.

With thanks and best wishes.
